Fred T. Merritt
Fred T. Merritt, CAPT (Ret), 83, died March 19. Saving
lives was routine for the man who added his name to a
family of Coast Guardsmen. Both his grandfathers were
in the Coast Guard. One served as a Public Health doctor
and the other with the lighthouse service. His father,
his brother, three uncles, and four cousins were also
members of the USCG. Fred had advanced from SA to CAPT.
It is difficult to single out any one episode of Fred's
career as characteristic, but those who served with him
will agree that he was one of a kind. I wish favorable
