CWO Robert Melia

Chief Warrant Officer Bob Melia passed away 12/03/02 unexpectedly. 'Boats' led the Eighth District into the age of thermal imagery for environmental protection in the 'M' field from the Marine Safety Office, New Orleans, LA. His wit and leadership touched all that encountered Bob. Having been deployed with Bob as his partner-in-training during many pollution incidents, I spent many hours in the vehicle and hanging out of CG helos with him. Bob was called to OKC after the bombing of the Murrah Federal Building to lend his thermal imagery skills in searching for survivors. He never failed to go when called - no matter the risk. After retirement, Bob enjoyed his time by opening his own thermal imagery business where he continued helping out his fellow Americans. Everything from night searches for lost people in harm's way with Louisiana State Police helos to helping the Daughters of the American Revolution locate mass grave sites of their ancestors. He was a CoastGuardsman in the truest sense of the word and the world was a better place having him always 'on standby'. I am a better person for having served with him and having been blessed by his friendship. He leaves behind a wonderful wife, Karen, children and grandhchildren - all of which he was always so very proud of. Fair Winds and Following Seas, Boats -All My Best!
