John W. McMinn CWO4 ret.

CWO4 John McMinn, or Mr. Mac to many, died of cancer on May 22, 1999. He is survived by his two sons, Bill and Mike McMinn, and stepdaughter, Dorothea Kelly. Mac loved the Coast Guard and it was good to us. Born in Newark, NJ in 1914, he joined the Navy in 1932 for four years as a radioman, serving on the USS Trenton. He volunteered again in 1944 and was a navy radioman assigned to the Marines and stationed on Guam. Released in 1945 he wanted more then what civilian life had to offer and joined the Coast Guard in 1947 as a radioman. Before he retired in 1971 he served on or at: USCGC Taney, USCGC Gresham, Loran Station Yakutat, AK, USCGC Courier in Rhodes, Greece, Brooklyn Supply Base, SF and Barbers Point Air Stations, and others. His ashes will join those of his wife, Dolores, who died in 1986, by being scattered at sea of the coast off Fort Bragg, CA. Besides a great father he was a good friend and I will miss him very much.
