Captain Donald J. McCann, USCG (Retired)
Captain Donald J., McCann, USCG (Retired), graduate of USCG Academy,
Class of 1947, died on December 8, 1997 at Portland, Maine. His last
assignments were as CO of NORTHWIND, homeported in Seattle, and Commander
of Group Portland in South Portland, Maine. During his CG career, he was
captain of five ships. In Northwind, he made the first round trip passage
through the Northwest Passage in a single season. He was on scene
commander for the 100,000 barrel oil spill from the tanker TAMANO in
Casco Bay Maine in 1972. He retired in 1973. He is survived by his
wife of 50 years, Biba McCann, 547 Ocean Street, South Portland, ME
04106, their nine children and his twin brother, Captain Jack McCann,
USCG(Ret.) 6654 Tidewater Lane, Wilmington, NC 28403 Donald was a
great friend and a true shipmate, and the person I held in highest
regard among all those with whom I served during my years in the
Coast Guard. Farewell, Donald, Godspeed.
