Joseph Louis 'Sherman' Masinter (MU2)

Served during WWII from 1942 to 1945 in New Orleans doing what he loved, playing music in the Coast Guard Band. The 'Guardsmen' were professional swing and jazz musicians coming 'off the road' to help in the war effort by boosting morale and entertaining troops and civilians along the Gulf Coast in the 8th Coast Guard District. This was not the traditional part of Coast Guard service but serve at 35 he did, being discharged when the war ended to resume his peacetime musical pursuits. He played and taught music in New Orleans til he died in 1994 at age 86, still maintaing many of the old relationships established during the war. He was the first of 3 generations of Coasties. He was our Dad and Grandfather.
