CWO3 Martin Kimmel, USCG(Ret)
'Marty' crossed the bar on November 16, 2006. Details unknown, I got the word from ETCS E.H. McLees. A full announcement will appear in the February issue of the BSP/AV newsletter.
I first met Marty on October 11, 1968 when I arrived as a lowly SA at LORSTA Port Clarence, AK. He greeted me with that big, wide eyed, smile of his and asked 'Who won the World Series?' I was happy to tell another Michigan native it was our Detroit Tigers.
When he rotated back to the lower 48 and Group Soo for his retirement tour he and my father became friends. Throughout the next four decades we managed to remain in touch and cheer each other up when sadness came; he bolstering me when my father died and I did what I could when his beloved Betty passed away. A good shipmate remembers the good and ignores the bad of those he served with. Marty, with his gravely voice and eager ways, was a great shipmate and I will forever miss him.
