Lt. William C. Hidinger, USCG - Ret.
Lt. William C. Hidinger crossed the bar on November
10th, 1998 in El Paso, TX and was honored with a military service at Fort
Bliss National Cemetery on November 13th. His passing was preceded by his
wife of 39 years, Dorothy who passed away in May of 1998. 'Doc' Hidinger
was a 26 year veteran of the Coast Guard who enlisted in September of 1947
at Tampa, FL. The only cutters he served aboard were the cutters
Ponchatrain, Gentian and Ingham. He also served in the Philippine
Islands and at the Iwo Jima Loran Station.
Lt. Hidinger was a plank owner at Governors Island, NY when the Coast
Guard took over the island from the U.S. Army in 1967. Additional duty
stations included the Recruit Training Center in Cape May, NJ, Coast Guard
Headquarters in Washington, D.C. and the District Office in Portsmouth,
VA where he retired in 1973. After Coast Guard retirement he went on to
attend college at the Medical College of Virginia and the University of
Texas at El Paso. He retired, again, in 1995 from the Ysleta Independent
School District in El Paso, TX having been a High School English teacher
for ten years at J. M. Hanks High School. His second retirement finally
allowed him time for playing golf with his friends, which he loved to do.
Condolences will be shared with his other children, grandchildren and
great-grandchildren by sending them to David G. Hidinger,
