Adrian Hagens

Adrians Hagens died by his own hand the first week of November 1998. Adrian and I were together through high school in Seattle, boot camp in Alameda (Alpha 79; Jan-Mar 1971), and Yeoman School on Governors Island. Starting in '71 Adrian served on the Northwind and then other breakers. He was a 13th District Homesteader -- I don't think he served outside of Washington State. After 10 years of active duty as a Yeoman, diver, and recruiter, he joined the reserves in about 1980 and there he became CWO (PERS). I didn't see Adrian but only occassionally all those years since we both went to sea. In recent years I only saw him at our high school renunion. It is troubling to me to wonder how a man who was once always by my side, who was once so proud, could have slipped away and into despair. Please use Fredsplace to keep in contact with those who were once so dear. They may need you, but you don't know.

Frog Hagens

I met Frog on PRECOM detail at Sand Point while assigned to Polar Star. Funny the things you remember at times like this. Like the day I bounced my heaving line off the hood of his car when we came back from sea trials. Or planning the Arctic Circle initiation with him and the rest of the gang in the First Class lounge. It was a dandy too, he saw to that. He was my friend and a good shipmate. I shall miss him alot.

Adrian (Frog) Hagens

I just read that Frog took his own life in November and I am deeply saddened...I remember a YN2 on Polar Star's Plankowner crew, full of life, tempting fate with dives beneath the Arctic Icepack, and always ready to help a young sailor out of a jam...when I reported to Polar Star's Precom detail as a brand new FNDC in October of '75, he was the first person I talked to. I needed a ride from the airport 'cause I'd spent all my money. I wish I'd been there when he needed a ride...I saw him about 3 years ago, just before I retired; I gave him and his Scout troop a tour of Polar Sea...my last tour. We talked about a reunion of Polar Star's Commissioning detail...I guess we waited too long. Sorry Frog. I hate to see you go this way mate...I hate to see you go at all.
