LT Laurence B. Williams, LT Mark E Koteek, ASMCS Peter A.
Leeman, AM1 Michael R. Gill
I'm sure the above listed names are in the archives here
at Fred's Place, but every time I look at the list at the
bottom of this page, it stands out to me that their names
are not among the men lost in the line of duty.
These men died in a helocopter accident in Shelter Cove,
California, on Monday morning, July 12, 1994, responding to
a mayday call from a stranded sailboat. The copter went
down in heavy fog at the edge of a beachside cliff.
Anytime there is word of a downed helocopter, military
plane, etc., the memories of the events of July 12th and
the days that follow are brought to the surface.
You men are gone, but never forgotten.
As Captain Joseph A. Walker, Jr., said in his speech the
day of the memorial service,
"The Coast Guard is something that you are. It's not
something that you do."
