Ernest A. Garcia
Ernest A. Garcia, Electrician Mate First Class, USCG, crossed
the bar on 5/20/2005 after 83 years. He enjoyed a successful life in Metairie Louisiana for the
past 45 years. I had the pleasure of meeting Ernest a few years ago at a wedding. Ernest and I
spoke for hours about his time in the CG. He had served aboard the USCGC Northwind during WWII
and had been deployed to Antarctica for Operation High Jump in 1946 with Admiral Byrd. Even
though Ernest was 42 years my senior we shared a bond only sailors can share. We discovered we
both had served on the same Cutter, although 36 years apart. We spent time whispering stories
about the time we spent aboard the Grand Ole Lady. It was uplifting to see the gleam in his eyes
even after all these years as he spun his yarns. I could tell then that he was a sailor's
sailor.Ernest's survivors include a son, Ernest
Garcia; a daughter, Patricia Garcia Ragusa; five grandchildren; and five great
grandchildren.Ernest, may you have fair winds and following seas...Respectfully, Ken Livingston,
CWO USCG (Ret.)
