Duane H. Miller
Duane H. Miller, who served in the United States
Coast Guard for many years passed away March 9, 2003 at his hime in Detroit, Michiagn of
Parkinsons Disese. He served aboard the Acushnet, Barataria, and Yakatat as damage control while
stationed in Portland, Maine in the 1950's. He was predeceased by his brother Hugh Darrell Miller
of Virginia (USMC), his brother Lynn Warren Miller of Ohio (USN), his sister Jeannette M. Miller
of Michigan (WAC), and his parents Darrell and Anna Miller of Michigan. He was survived by 3 grown
children Lynne (Miller) Sherlund-Dupuis of South Carolina, Laurie (Miller) Schenevar of Michigan,
and Hugh Miller of Michigan. After serving in Coast Guard he went to work for the City of Detroit
and retired as the Civic Center Control Room Operator in 1982. He enjoyed traveling taking
cruises and had visited Europe, Florida and Nevada, Maine, as well as his favorite past time of
visiting casinos. His oldest was born while he was on active duty and he used to share 'some' of
his experiences, so his for miliary duty and honor will live on. Because of the ramp up for the
war in Iraq there ws no military presence available for his funeral and no formal military honors.
His oldest child was presented his flag. The day the war officially started the flag was being
carried onboard a commercial flight, A TSA Supervisor in Detroit hand inspected the flag with
great respect and returned it to her. Somehow her non-stop flight was diverted to Atlantic City,
and slowly passed the United States Coast Guard Station there.. so in some ways he did recieve the
honors that all U.S.
Veterans deserve.
