Frank Dernley GMCM USCGR (Ret)
It is with heavy heart that I have to let the readers of Freds Place know that Frank suffered a fatal heart attack while driving on RT 195 near his home in East Providence RI. Frank was a dedicated member of the USCG Reserve. I first met Frank in the late 60's early 70's when he was a member of the old reserve port ops unit and I was the Station Keeper. I remember Frank well, especially training all of the crew at MSO Providence with small arms qualifications. We were one of the lucky units, we had a fully qualified range officer assigned to our unit. Frank was willing to drop everything and assist with training. He was a life member of the local pistol club and an expert with firearms. He was a retired Battalion Chief with the East Providence Fire Department. Speaking to a dispatcher for that department he said ' I loved it when Chief Dernley was on duty, You could never get him excited. He was a true proffessional.' Frank was instrumental in getting me interest in competition pistol shooting. Never could shoot as well as he could. Frank! keep the line tight barrels pointed down range.
