Published in the Asbury Park Press 1/5/04
JOSEPH CARLO, 85, of OCEAN GROVE, died Sunday, Jan. 4, at home with his wife beside him after a long and very courageous battle with cancer. He was a 34-ear veteran with the U.S. Coast Guard, serving in World War II in Belgium and in Vietnam during the Vietnam War. He was an instructor at the Coast Guard Academy, Cape May, in the 1950s. He retired in 1973 at the rank of master chief boatswain mate. He owned and operated the Paperback Exchange, Belmar, with his wife. They enjoyed traveling, working at the bookstore, and especially dining out at different restaurants. He always said that the key to good living was to 'only eat when you're hungry.' Born and raised in Astoria, N.Y., he moved to Belmar upon retiring from the military in 1973, and then to Ocean Grove in 1988.
Surviving are his wife of 10 years, Isabella Koffler Carlo; a stepson, George Green of Bradley Beach; two sisters, Fran Borasi of Vineland, and Marie Dempsey of Bennington, Vt.; and two nieces and a nephew, Madeline Pennente, Virginia Shirley and James Borasi, and their families.
Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at Johnson-McGinley Funeral Home, 2652 Highway 138, Wall, followed by a funeral service at 6 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Coast Guard Mutual Assistance, 4200 Wilson Blvd., Suite 610, Arlington, VA 22203-1804.
