YNCS Gordon E. Burmeister,USCG(RET)
I just saw in the Retiree Newsletter where my mentor YNCS Gordon E. (Uncle Kurli) BURMEISTER passed away in August 2000. Kurlie was the Chief I worked for at Group Office (COTP) New Orleans upon completing YN School in February 1959. Kurlie never knew a stranger. He was a recruiter in the 13th District prior to coming to the Eighth where he served as Recruiting Supervisor in that District after he and I parted ways from Group New Orleans. He sat an example for a lot of young coasties and was blessed with great leadership abilities. He ran the exchange at Group New Orleans and the whole crew said if our four bagger CO came in and Uncle Kurli decided the old man needed a white hat he could make the old man go away with one. While he suffered a stroke that laid him low physically a few years ago it didn't dull his mind. The last time I spoke to him he was as sharp as ever. To all who knew or served with him we lost a great friend. Because of him I stayed in the Guard for over twenty three years and I am sure there are others out there who were touched as well. I know Aunt June will miss him as we all will. I salute you Senior Chief.
