Bill Birchfield, CWO3 BOSN (ret)
Bill Birchfield passed away on
Monday, October 17, 2005 after a short bout with lung cancer. Bill was in the Coast Guard from
1945 until 1965. His last assignment was as Commanding Officer of the COSMOS homeported in St.
Petersburg, Florida. After retirement, he was Harbormaster for the City of Clearwater Florida for
20 years, retiring in 1985. I had the privilege of knowing and working for Bill over a ten year
period. He was a true professional in every sense of the word. He will be greatly missed by all
his old shipmates and friends. Fair winds and following seas Bill.
