Nicholas (Nick) C. Barnard

EDWARDSBURG -- Nicholas 'Nick' Cole Barnard, 62 years, who resided on Elkhart Road, died Tuesday (Jan. 18, 2005) at 11:25 p.m. at his home after an illness.Nick was born Oct. 29, 1942, in South Bend, the son of Cal J. and Mary Jean (Phillips) Barnard. He was married Nov. 28, 1981, in Elkhart, to Sallie Cory, who survives.Other survivors are two sons, Shaun (Pam) Cory and: Nick BarnardShannon Cory, both of Edwardsburg, and two granddaughters, Ashley Cory and Cassandra Long. There are two sisters, Sandra (Sam) Wise of Edwardsburg and Mary (John) Okleshen of Elkhart, and a nephew, Rodney Chandler. Also surviving are two special people, Kathy Dukes of Elkhart who is a cousin and friend, and an aunt, Virginia (Ginny) Phillips of Elkhart.Nick was preceded in death by his parents and his stepmother, Lois A. Barnard.Nick graduated from Edwardsburg High School and served six years in the United States Navy and 20 years in the United States Coast Guard, having retired from active duty in October 1993. Nick had worked at Gillette Manufacturing and Key Machine for several years. He attended the New Hope United Methodist Church in Elkhart.He will be remembered by his love for his family, his great sense of humor, his natural charm, his strong will and generosity to those around him. He loved spending his free time outdoors, hunting, fishing, boating, and visiting his friends at The Trading Post in Edwardsburg.Paul E. Mayhew Funeral Home, 26863 W. Main St., Edwardsburg, is handling arrangements.Friends and family may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at New Hope United Methodist Church, 28765 C.R. 4, where it intersects with C.R. 5 in Elkhart. Friends also may call one hour before the 11 a.m. funeral Saturday at the church. Pastor Lee Campbell, minister of the church, and Richard Barfell from the Ribbon of Life will officiate. There will be an American flag folding ceremony following the service. Cremation will follow the service, with interment at a later date.Memorials may be given to Ribbon of Life, 600 East Blvd., Elkhart, IN 46514.
