Melvin T. Abbott

Chief Journalist (Retired) Mel Abbott crossed over the bar at home in Columbus, Ohio on September 27, 2001. His loving wife, Bernice, was at his side as he passed into the arms of his Heavenly father. Mel's career in the Coast Guard was highlighted by his reporting of the collision of the ANDREA DORIA and STOCKHOLM in July of 1956 not far from New York where Mel was stationed. Mel's work on that case earned him the highest respect and admiration of the New York press as well as many others in the same profession. A wonderful friend and a great shipmate, Mel will be sorely missed by his family and all of those who knew him and who had the privilege of serving with him. Fair winds and following seas old friend. We love you and miss you!
