Catchin' Up

Week 6 finally brought NORTHLAND home to Virginia! We spent the first few days of our final week at sea transiting up to a closed fishing area off the coast of Maryland in hopes of finding some fishing vessels to board. On Saturday night, we had our weekly morale dinner, with Deck Department serving up the excellent cuisine this time. While the final decision hasn’t been made, some believe deck department provided the best pizza yet!

When we arrived at the regulated fishing area, we found a few fishing vessels to conduct “Living Marine Resources (LMR),” or fisheries boardings on. The boardings provided a great opportunity for many new boarding team members and boarding officers to gain experience and work towards qualification. The weather was starting to pick up though and on our final boarding of the evening, BM1 fell overboard while disembarking the fishing vessel. Fortunately, our small boat was quick to respond and safely recovered him. Thankfully, BM1 was fine and there were no injuries…he is now affectionately referred to as “Oscar.”

After all the excitement of a day full of boardings, we learned that we would need to pull into port early due to approaching bad weather. We were disappointed to have to cut our time performing the CG missions short, but also excited to be coming home a little early to be with our families for the holidays…and what a homecoming it was! Even though we pulled into the Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base rather than our own homeport of Portsmouth, many families were waiting on the pier. Everyone was thrilled to see their loved ones just in time for Thanksgiving.

The crew of NORTHLAND will have the Thanksgiving holiday to spend with our families and friends before launching into our Tailored Annual Cutter Training (TACT) for the next two weeks. There will be long days, both inport and underway, full of training and drills, but it is a great way to ensure our crew and ship are ready to answer the call to duty, whenever and wherever needed..

Happy Thanksgiving and Happy Holidays to everyone!

Congratulations

Congratulations to the following NORTHLAND sailors:
