Catchin' Up
Week 3 brought NORTHLAND to one of the Coast Guard’s ever-favorite ports- Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, a.k.a. - GTMO! As always, GTMO provided the crew with a great Navy Exchange to stock up on all the necessities and the opportunity to just relax for a couple days. In GTMO we were finally able to transfer custody of the detainees, samples of contraband, and the vessel we had been towing around the Caribbean to some other law enforcement agencies and another CG vessel. Last we heard one of our sister ships from Portsmouth were the winners of the “Tow That Vessel to Honduras” sweepstakes. GTMO definitely isn’t Aruba or Martinique, but sometimes you can’t beat being able to call home for nine cents a minute.
After some technical experts came down to help examine our generator problem it was determined that the generator needed to be replaced so we headed North to Mayport, FL for repairs. The relatively quick transit had its ups and downs…literally. NORTHLAND encountered its first rough seas of the patrol and many of the crew, especially our new sailors found themselves a little queasy. Despite the seas, the Operations Department did find one night, where the weather wasn’t so bad, and cooked up a delicious morale meal of pizza & pasta! The cooks got a well deserved night off and all of OPS department had a great time cooking for and serving the crew!
After our arrival in Mayport we were able to start our generator replacement and transfer the remaining bales of cocaine to the DEA for testing and destruction. We wanted to take pictures and share them with everyone, but were unable due to legal concerns. We’re making good progress getting the generator replaced and taking advantage of the time here in Mayport to conduct exterior maintenance and training in preparation for our Tailored Annual Cutter Training (TACT) after Thanksgiving.
