Catchin' Up

Week two of NORTHLAND's patrol went slowly as we anxiously awaited the first port call since getting underway May 15th. Training helped fill the days and our new shipmates are quickly coming up to speed. The crew busied themselves by attending Anti-Terrorism Force Protection, Damage Control, and Naval Warfare training. Luckily, the weather cooperated, providing us with smooth sailing for almost the entire week.

As the end of the week approached, the greater the anticipation of liberty in Madeira, Portugal. Madeira is an island in the Atlantic Ocean approximately 350 miles southwest of Portugal. While we were pulling in, we realized that this was one of the most visually appealing places we had ever seen.

Once moored, the crew took the opportunity to enjoy the food, hiking, wine, and sights of the island for a couple days before heading back out to sea. This port visit was principally for resupply. Our next port visit will involve combined operations and training with the host nation's Maritime Safety and Security forces.
