Catchin' Up
Pyro Shoot -- Early in the week, NORTHLAND conducted a pyrotechnics shoot for all newly reported personnel, and anyone else interested. The shoot gave crew members the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the different flares onboard the cutter, and provided first hand experience on how to activate them.
DC Olympics -- The cutter held a competition earlier in the week to test the damage control skills of the crew. Crew members were split up into teams based on their damage control assignments, and competed against one another in a series of activities including everything from donning an SCBA to plugging a simulated "ruptured pipe." While the entire crew performed well, the members from Repair locker II came out on top -- Good Job everyone!
New Personnel -- The crew welcomed aboard a few new personnel during our GTMO port call. New Personnel include YN3 Hudson, FN Renwick, FN Hall, and SN Aylieff. Welcome to the NORTHLAND family!
Showing off the Ship -- While inport GTMO, NORTHLAND was able to offer tours to roughly 70 local elementary school students. The tours gave the students a chance to see the inside of the ship from the bridge all the way to the mess deck, and ask questions about life in the Coast Guard and onboard a ship.
Words from the Crew
After having been out since early February, NORTHLAND's crew couldn't be more excited to see family and friends back home. Below are some words of various crew members regarding their patrol highlights, and feelings about returning home after this long journey.
"I am really looking forward to coming home and spending a night in my own bed with out having to wake up for a watch or GE. I can't wait to eat some good homemade food. Most of all though I am looking forward to seeing my friends and family on the pier." ~ IT3 Steven Leavitt
" The highlight of the patrol for me, and I think many would agree, was when the mighty warship NORTHLAND "completed" Tailored Annual Cutter Training (TACT). Through those two long weeks of TACT I saw the whole ship pull together and enthusiastically execute all training objectives. Whether it was conducting a fueling at sea with the USNS KANAWHA, combating a simulated main space fire, or steaming at General Quarters in a simulated battle scenario, the whole crew work long hard hours and were always motivated to exceed expectations. As this 69 day patrol comes to a close I am looking forward to many of the creature comforts I take for granted when on dry land. I am looking forward to things like taking a shower with out flip-flops on, or working out in a gym where the deck isn't moving. All of the little things add up and make coming home a highly anticipated event, but most of all I look forward to being able to pick up my phone and call my family and friends. I know there are many sacrifices that all of us make, but knowing that we have made a difference in someway makes it all worth it." ~ 1LT, LTJG Dan Delgado
