Routine Deployment - Week 9
We join the crew of the Cutter Northland underway on patrol in South America for UNITAS.

Catchin' Up
The crew of the Northland has accomplished quite a bit in the last couple of weeks. The biggest news is the capture of two go-fasts in two consecutive days! This was followed by helo operations. During helo ops, an HH-65 Dolphin helicopter practiced landing on the flight deck of the Northland. After all the adventure, the crew was grateful for a lengthy, relaxed port call in San Juan, Puerto Rico. During the port call, crewmembers enjoyed beaches, local shops and restaurants, and a ship’s party complete with a roasted pig. A few shipmates departed from the Northland, and a new Lieutenant (Engineer Officer Select) joined the crew. Welcome aboard, LT Hamby!
After all the sun and fun, it was time to get underway again! During the transit, a ceremony was held during which ET1 Medalis was promoted to Chief Warrant Officer. The crew cheered as he received his new shoulder boards and officer combination cover. Mr. Medalis is still trying to adjust to being called “Sir” and eating in the wardroom. Good luck with the transition, Mr. Medalis.
The crew worked hard on repairs and touch-ups in preparation for the upcoming change of command. To take a brake from the hard work that’s been going on, the Northland anchored off of Conception Island for a day. Crewmembers got the chance to go ashore and enjoy the pristine beach on the island. It was a nice way to relax before the last part of the transit to homeport. It’s been an eventful patrol, full of learning, hard work, adventure, and fun. Still, the crew is looking forward to returning home to Virginia to see their families and friends!
