Catchin' Up

The crew of USCGC NORTHLAND has emerged from the realm of King Neptune and Davey Jones as Shellbacks. This past week NORTHLAND crossed the equator, a feat not many sailors experience during their careers. Crewmembers, dressed in their “wog” best, pants inside out and backwards with custom made white t-shirts, gathered on the flight deck. On this sunny afternoon the Shellbacks selected their group of “wogs” in anticipation for the upcoming festivities. After groups were selected the skit planning began. Pollywogs try to gain favor with King Neptune through song and dance. It made for an exciting night, but the real entertainment was to take place the next day.

To prove their worthiness to King Neptune, the pollywogs completed different tests of strength and saltiness. They “rowed the boat” through “squalls” (got water spritzed on them while singing), spoke with the whales (blew through plastic bottles while wearing mops as wigs), bobbed for fish eyes (olives), and crawled their way through the whale’s belly (a slip and slide!). King Neptune himself made an appearance at the festivities, and demanded that the Pollywogs serenade him with song. The day was long and rigorous, but in the end, the sea gods were appeased, and the Pollywogs were granted the status of Shellback. Each new Shellback will receive a special certificate for completing King Neptune’s ceremony.
