Catchin' Up

By Seaman George Degener

CGC Northland began this week by visiting Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. While in Rio, crewmembers were able to participate in a community service project, painting a school and basketball court in an area outside the city. These members left a positive mark, representing the Coast Guard as well as the United States. Northland’s law enforcement officers also had the opportunity to conducted training with Coast Guard International Training Division, instructing Brazilian and Argentinean Naval personnel on boarding procedures and use of force tactics. The partner nations enjoyed the training gained a better perspective on the Coast Guard and its missions. We were given the opportunity to host a reception for Brazilian Dignitaries, allowing our Food Service Division to show their culinary skills, making an assortment of treats and deserts. After departing Rio, Northland began UNITAS 49, with formation steaming alongside U.S., Brazilian, and Argentinean vessels. We also conducted a Fueling at Sea (FAS) drill, and mock boardings, allowing an Argentinean boarding team onto Northland and sending our boarding team members onto their ship. Everyone is looking forward to the next week, continuing to conduct the nation’s business on distant waters.

Congratulations OS3 Van Camp!!!!
