Catchin' Up

This week CGC NORTHLAND and crew had the opportunity to travel into an area of nautical significance. NORTHLAND crossed into the southern hemisphere marking only the second time in the ships history that it has made the voyage across the line. Although the crossing the ling ceremony will be conducted on our return trip, the Commanding Officer along with the other shellbacks surprised everyone with a fun filled day, including a swim call and fish call, after everyone departed the water of course. The flight deck nets were lowered and the crew had the opportunity to swim “across the line”. Smiles could be seen for miles as everyone partook in the festivities. Although no fish were caught, it was an enjoyable once in a lifetime opportunity.

Later in the week training continued for the upcoming UNITAS patrol. The Operations Department is having weekly jeopardy matches to practice maneuvers and signals. The Engineering Department is busy as always ensuring the machinery is up and running. DCC Sullivan is commended for his remarkable calculations in determining the option of free-wheeling a shaft to maximize fuel efficiency and minimize wear on machinery while maintaining ordered speed. The Supply Department has been busy making preparations for our stop in Rio de Janeiro. SUPPO Grande, Mr. Legate, is setting up to make this stop memorable for the crew. Last but not least, Deck Department has been painting furiously to ensure the ship will sparkle. They have also been training for the upcoming deck related exercises. In other news the Junior Officer class of 2006 has received their new assignments, Congratulations.

Check back next week for updates on CGC NORTHLAND, underway in the Southern Hemisphere.
