Catchin' Up
Northland underwent a world wind of activity. The crew hit the ground running after our recent mid-patrol break in Boston. The week began with joint operations involving the Canadian Coast Guard along The Hague Line, which was followed by another mid-patrol break in Newport, RI.
Canadian Coast Guard ship Sir William Alexander, and cutter Northland patrolled their countries’ respective exclusive economic zones. Law enforcement personnel and crew members were exchanged to gain insight on the operations of both Coast Guards. Two Canadian law enforcement officers joined Northland’s boarding team aboard several fisheries boardings. They were given the opportunity to observe the U.S. Coast Guard’s procedures while conducting boardings. ENS Clark and SN Degener, Northland’s law enforcement personnel, had the opportunity to observe the Canadian law enforcement activities aboard Canadian fishing vessels. This experience helped establish communication practices for both countries for future joint ventures and gave each particular unit the chance to view the different practices followed by each country. Northland would like to thank Canadian Coast Guard ship Sir William Alexander for their great hospitality and professionalism.
After our exciting time with Sir William Alexander, the crew enjoyed a couple of days of rest and relaxation in the wonderful city of Newport. Newport, also known as the sailing capital of the world, is an upscale community that offers great dinning and a beautiful waterfront view. Some crewmembers took the opportunity to view the luxurious mansions overlooking Narragansett Bay, while others opted for the local bar scene.
Check back next week for more exciting news from CGC Northland on a living marine resources patrol in the North Atlantic.
