Catchin' Up

It was an exciting week as usual onboard CGC NORTHLAND. NORTHLAND patrolled outside the New York City area early in the week. Fisheries boardings went well, and fishermen in the area were given valuable information on safety. The light loom from the skyline of New York could be seen from the boat, only making everyone anxious for the upcoming mid-patrol break in Boston. Speaking of the skyline, the lookouts had a field day reporting all the air contacts flying in and out of New York.

After much anticipation, NORTHLAND entered the wonderful city of Boston. Boston was a beautiful city with much to offer every member of the crew. The transit inbound was breathtaking as the skyscrapers rose over the horizon. The city is rich in national history, with Paul Revere Park a short walk away. Old Iron Sides, the USS Constitution, could also be seen across the water in all her glory. The mooring location was only minutes from downtown, which the engineers didn’t see until after the raw water pump change out. The city offered entertaining nightlife, various museums, and vast shopping opportunities. The Italian food was amazing in the North End; one must not also forget Mike’s Pastries which offers up their famous cheesecake desserts. The New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox faced off the same weekend in a three game series (Yankees dominated, winning two of the three games). Some members of the crew were lucky enough to get tickets to the sold out game. All in all the needed break and magnificent city made for an exciting week onboard.

CGC NORTHLAND had the pleasure of having the General Counsel of Homeland Security onboard for a tour and short cruise through Boston Harbor. The General Counsel of Homeland Security made NORTHLAND one of his stops along a world wind tour of Coast guard assets. The members of crew made the ship look incredible and performed marvelously during the General Counsel’s visit.

Now back out to sea, NORTHLAND continues to patrol the waters of the North Atlantic, doing the nation’s business. Check back in next week for updates from the crew of CGC NORTHLAND.
