Catchin' Up

Refueling the Tanks

CGC NORTHLAND sailed on into week 2, continuing to build on the training undergone during week 1. New members are starting to get the hang of their daily duties and slipping into a routine. The crew is really starting to mesh and click, working like a well oiled machine. The week was filled with exciting events on top of the already exciting mission of the protection of America’s living marine resources. The scenery is beautiful, consisting of gorgeous sunrises, the natural fireworks display of stars, and the occasional play of marine life surrounding the cutter. Whale sightings are keeping the marine mammal officer busy, but provide a great back drop for the daily work that takes place in the North Atlantic.

CGC NORTHLAND made a fuel stop at Naval Station Newport, where the crew as well as the ship could pick up needed supplies and refuel the tanks for the up coming week. Crewmembers visited the Navy Exchange and stocked up on snacks and treats, contacted family and friends, and stretched their legs shore side. Seeing some of the exquisite sailboats and vessels within the Newport Harbor was also a treat.

The crew looked forward to gun exercises in which new and old members alike participated in hands on training relating to shipboard weapons systems. A morale shoot of small arms, run by the weapons division, also added a bit of excitement for the week. This gave the crew an opportunity to fire some rounds and become more familiar with the weapons onboard. Smiles could be seen from miles; the crew thoroughly enjoyed, thanks weapons division! To complete the week, the Support Department made pizza for the crew, and it was oh so delicious. Stay tuned next week for updates as CGC NORTHLAND continues to protect living marine resources in the North Atlantic.
