Catchin' Up

NORTHLAND’s final week underway was a busy one, both in terms of training and morale activities. Morale was high to begin with because we were finally heading north and towards home, but the morale committee worked hard to make our last week even better! The Spades tournament wrapped up, with BM2 Montejano and HS1 Marin as the final winners, we has a crazy hat contest with GM3 Rios winning the big prize and a raffle for “first off the brow” when we returned home, which OS3 Day won. The AVDET tried to get us some morale flights in before they left, but unfortunately the weather didn’t cooperate with us, but some select members of the crew were still able to have the opportunity to shoot the .50 cal rifle from the HITRON. Northland then combined a little training with morale by having a gun shoot with our pistols and rifles for familiarization and a bit of stress relief!

The week also had a short stop in Mayport, Florida for our official offload of the 41 bales of cocaine from our March drug bust. Upon our arrival, the media was waiting and many of the crew was featured on local news stations both in Florida and in Virginia.

The media also showed up for our final return to homeport on April 11th, as well as many family and friends. The pier was crowded with people, waiting to welcome home NORTHLAND from our 63 day patrol. Everyone is excited about our arrival home and the long import time! It is great to be home!

Congratulations to the following crew members:

  • SN Heinlein was awarded Non-rate of the patrol!
  • ET3 Newsome was awarded the Sailor of the Quarter award!
  • OS1 Herman received the Patriot award, for petty officer of the patrol!
