The operations, known as UNITAS-meaning unity in Latin-and PANAMAX, respectively, are coordinated by the U.S. Defense Department's Southern Command and exercise interoperability of nations with interests in regional maritime security, and the continued security of the Panama Canal, a vital commerce route between the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean seaboards. At least 15 countries have pledged to participate in these exercises. These exercise also support U.S. National Security initiatives

The Mohawk's primary missions include halting illegal immigration by sea by foreign nations, seizing vessels attempting to smuggle illegal narcotics into the U.S., regulating commercial fishing to protect against over-harvesting this natural resource, and saving life and property in distress on the high-seas. The Mohawk crew is credited with the rescue of over 5,000 Haitian, Cuban, and Dominican Republic migrants, and the seizure of more then 20,700 pounds of illegal drugs, including marijuana and cocaine.
