Catchin' Up
Welcome aboard MOHAWK’s summer patrol! We cast off lines 1-4 only a week ago and so far we’ve had some very busy days. There are many new faces amongst the crew and learning is abundant. Drills commenced the afternoon of our departure to train the crew in their new roles during various evolutions and emergencies. Our Damage Control Assistant, ENS Bicsak, and his shop of Damage Controlman spend every evening training new personnel in the art of emergency response. Also at quarters several times a week, ENS Bicsak reviews equipment and procedures. This week focused on the “Emergency Escape Breathing Device” and its proper wear and use. The crew also practiced escaping blindfolded from their respective living spaces. All in all, training has been a devoted focus by all. Additionally, our Law Enforcement team conducted refresher training on use of force, statement writing, and Coast Guard authority and jurisdiction.
When there is a break from training, the crew likes to take part in various morale events and physical fitness. On Monday night a group played the Battle of the Sexes board game and the males won (at least the females let them think so)! Almost everyone that walked through the messdeck during the game stopped and answered a question. Bingo is also a big morale event that takes place on Wednesday nights. This past week, winners walked away with a canon photo printer, an itunes gift card and memory sticks!
The crew is energetic and motivated to get the most out of our patrol. Already we have responded to a SAR Case and engineers provided rescue and assistance resulting in a salvaged fishing boat. We look forward to keeping you updated in the coming weeks.
