Catchin' Up

Weeks five and six were bridged together by a stop in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Prior to our stop, MOHAWK was busy boarding various vessels in our operational area. The crew responded at all hours to conduct law enforcement missions, including the interdiction of illegal migrants and assisting the Royal Bahamian Defense Force in counter-drug operations. The crews’ hard work and endurance has been impressive this patrol and I think we’ve all earned a quiet transit back home.

Congratulations to our Sailor of the Quarter nominees and BM3 Stanton who was selected as our Sailor of the Quarter for the first quarter of 2008. Also, HS1 Galvizo was named our Sailor of the Year for 2007!

The crew had an enjoyable stop in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Many made an immediate run to the exchange for much needed supplies and a chance to shop. Because of the great weather, crewmembers took to the various beaches and went snorkeling. While awaiting parts to repair a broken reefer compressor, MOHAWK got underway in the harbor to practice precision anchorage, pier approaches and dredging anchor.

The past few days have been busy with illegal migrant interdiction operations. All-hands worked hard through the night to move the 80 Haitian migrants from a sinking sail freighter onto MOHAWK. We worked throughout the night and completed the case safely.

Our patrol is swiftly coming to an end, and we are all excited to see the lights of Key West on the horizon.
