Catchin' Up
Welcome to our mid-way point in the patrol! By December 31st, we had assisted in the interdiction of 33 illegal migrants from the Dominican Republic and two drug seizures. Additionally, we ran tests with our emergency position indicating radio beacons (EPIRBS) and had an HU-25 Falcon find us based on its position. The rest of the week was spent gearing up for our port call in San Juan, Puerto Rico for New Years!
It did not take long for the crew to find out where to go to ring in the New Year. Needless to say, everyone had a great time out in the city and returned safely to the ship. Chief Fearn, our FSC, cooked up a wonderful spread for those on duty and onboard for New Years. The crew spent the rest of the time in San Juan grabbing a bite to eat, going to the movies, walking downtown through the shops and also visiting the forts.
Once back underway, MOHAWK worked with USCGC CUSHING to interdict another 41 illegal migrants from the Dominican Republic. Continuing with our mission, MOHAWK went through some pretty intense seas and is currently avoiding a storm system that has made even Key West, our homeport, feel like the North Pole. The crew ran a .50 caliber machine gun exercise to review the process for obtaining permission for warning shots and disabling fire on non-compliant vessels.
This week we also embarked a Creole interpreter and a Bahamian shiprider who will assist us in our missions while on patrol. We also have a new member of the wardroom, fresh out of Officer Candidate School. Welcome aboard ENS Turner!
