Catchin' Up

MOHAWK had another quick week underway in the Caribbean. Crewmembers enjoyed a brief port call and took advantage of the time to visit the Exchange on base and also visit the town’s brewery, historical forts, and shopping mall! The following few days underway were busy with gun shoots, fire drills, morale cooking, Damage Control training, and flight operations.

The Weapons division held two training sessions this week for the crew. The first gave the crew a chance to shoot the 7.62mm machine gun while the second was a familiarization fire for the small arms. GM1 Whanger, GM3 Bear and GM3 Mobiglia are the gunnersmates in the weapons division and they spent a lot of time coordinating the shoots.

The Damage Control Training Team (DCTT) ran the crew through a main space fire drill to keep everyone on their toes and knowledgeable in the event of a casualty. The Engineering Officer, LT Shurke, had a casualty of his own this week when his coveted DCTT hat was taken and later found embedded in a bowl of ice on the flightdeck one afternoon at quarters. Maybe from now on he’ll keep a closer eye on his things!

On Saturday night a few of the Electronics Technicians put together a southern feast for the crew! ETC Stinson, ET1 Aaron, and ET2 Mikelaitis did a wonderful job and the crew really enjoyed the hospitality. ETC made a delicious corn pudding, ET1 cooked up Maryland crabcakes, and ET2 got spicy with his low country boil! The ET’s cooking for the crew starts up a weekly, voluntary morale opportunity where different divisions can pick a theme and provide a meal for the crew. Next up, the officer’s are hosting pizza night!

The crew went through a Damage Control Round Robin to learn the basics of certain procedures. EMC Breck and CWO Lindo explained the specifics of the portable eductors onboard and HS1 Galvizo went through medical treatment for certain injuries. DC1 Youngflesh and ET1 Jorgensen set up a portable generator on the fantail and demonstrated its use. The fourth station was pipe plugging and patching hosted by CWO Jeffcoat and BM1 Garmany.

MOHAWK concluded the week with a port call, enjoying the chance to relax and visit a new place.

Congratulations
