Catchin' Up

Greetings from the MOHAWK! Week 1 was filled with many drills and familiarization exercises. There was a large turnover during the inport and many new crewmembers came onboard. We are all very anxious to see what lies ahead in the coming months. After leaving Key West we set our sights southbound. The crew is excited and hopeful that it will be a very productive and exciting trip. Soon after getting underway the crew was busy with Flight Quarters. Since then, we have been lucky enough to have great weather and calm seas.

To get back into the swing of things and life underway the crew went through several drills. Our small boats were launched day one for various law enforcement exercises. On Wednesday the ship went through a general emergency and abandon ship drill. Later on in the afternoon we went to flight quarters and simulated a helicopter crash on deck. It was great to give the new crewmembers a chance to learn new skills through all the drills. The following day we conducted law enforcement exercises and several touch and go’s with the helicopter on deck to give our tie-down crew, fueling team, helicopter control officers and landing signal officers more opportunity to break in on their specified jobs.

Life underway hasn’t been all drills; the crew did make time one evening for BINGO! There were many winners and very cool prizes distributed care of MORALE. It gave the crew a nice break and a chance to relax with shipmates.

MOHAWK made a brief stop on Friday to pick up some supplies and couldn’t miss the opportunity for more training inbound. The ship performed a precision anchorage and immediately weighed anchor to moor for the brief stop inport. In the next coming weeks, the crew looks forward to sharing some of their daily lives with family members, loved ones and friends.
