Welcome Aboard The CGC Healy
June 20, 2005
June 20, 2005: We join Cutter Healy as she sits in the ice approximately 100 miles north of Barrow,
Alaska. Haley is underway to conduct Arctic West East Summer (AWES) 2005 deployment.
Scientists aboard the Healy are taking core
samples from the bottom of the Arctic Ocean in order to determine weather climates thousands of
years ago.

An aircrew from Coast Guard Aviation Training Center Mobile, Ala., walks out of the hanger of the Coast Guard Cutter Healy. The aircrew is temporarily stationed aboard the Healy in order to support scientific ice research by transporting scientists to remote locations for ice samplings.

Petty Officer 1st Class James R. Pentecost, 29, of Cool, Calif., looks through a window and into a hallway for indications of a fire during a fire drill. The Healy is currently in the Arctic Ocean, about 100 miles north of Barrow, Alaska, assisting in Arctic research funded in part by the National Science Foundation.

Petty Officer 2nd Class Andy P. Benigno, 40, of Tacoma, Wash., awaits instruction while fighting a simulated fire. Fire simulations are conducted regularly aboard the ship to test the crew's fire fighting skills and efficiency.

Petty Officer 2nd Class Louis C. Bishop, 27, of Fairhope, Ala., uses a heat gun to affix "Beaker" decals to the tail of a Coast Guard HH-65 Dolphin helicopter. The flight crew aboard the Healy attach the decals to signify how many scientists they have transported to conduct ice research.

Scientists and crewmembers watch as the cutter's propellers break away ice from the back of the ship for the first time in two days about 100 miles north of Barrow, Alaska. The Healy had not moved since it became wedged between two ice floes while conducting a scientific ice patrol.

Petty Officer 2nd Class Louis C. Bishop, 27, of Fairhope, Ala., tightens a set of snow skis on an HH-65B Dolphin helicopter. Bishop is one of eight members from Coast Guard Aviation Training Center Mobile, Ala., stationed aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Healy, homeported in Seattle, in support of ice research missions funded by the National Science Foundation. The aircrew's deployment aboard the Healy marks the last mission for the crew of ATC Mobile who are working in support of the Coast Guard's Polar Operations Division.

Chief Petty Officer Don. L. Snider, 34, of Denver, Colo., serves as safety monitor while a 15-foot pipe carrying a ground sample from the floor of the Arctic Ocean is lifted aboard the Cutter Healy. The ground sample contains soil and sediment, which is thousands of years old. Scientists aboard the Healy will test the sample in order to determine climate conditions thousands of years ago.
