The DURANT was built by the Brown Shipbuilding Company in Houston TX August 3, 1943 and commissioned on November 16th
1943. She was originally used as a USN schoolship in Norfolk Va. During later escort duties to North Africa the German sub
U-873 surrendered to her. She was en route to Pearl Harbor when the war ended and after a brief stay she returned to the states..
She was placed out of commission in reserve on February 27th 1946.
DURANT was loaned to the Coast Guard on May 15th 1952 and commissioned WDE-489 serving on numerious Pacific weather stations
until she again was placed out of commission in reserve at San Diego on April 10th 1954 and returned to the Navy on June 16,
1954. Her first Coast Guard Commanding Officer was LCDR C.C. Knapp USCG

Tthe USS SAVAGE is an Edsall Class Destroyer Escort that started off her career Coast Guard manned. Built by Brown Shipbuilding
Company of Houston TX she was launched of April 30 1943 and commissioned on October 29th 1943. Her first Commanding Officer
was LCDR Oscar C. Rohnke, USCG. She spent the majority of her USCG career escorting convoys from the east coast of the United
States to African, Mediterranean and European ports. She also served briefly in Alaska escorting convoys. On June 13, 1945
she was decommissioned and continued her Navy service. She was stricken on 01 June, 1975 and disposed of as a target on 25
October, 1982.
