The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter WESTWIND (WAGB-281), an icebreaker, arrives at the small Greenland town of Sagigssivik, located on the norther shores of Melville Bay some 800 miles from the North Pole. She is escorting the small Danish supply freighter NANOK S., which on September 25 of this year, was engaged in a special errand of mercy. Heavy fields of sea ice in Melville Bay, the worst in many years, had prevented any supplies from reaching Sagigssivik during 1964, and the natives faced a winter of starvation. Upon learning of the town's plight, the United States Government made available the icebreakers WESTWIND and USS ATKA (ABG-3) to assist a supply ship in getting through to the town. Greeting the long awaited vessels are dog sled teams and joyful Eskimo drivers. (USCG)
