USCGC ALERT
Summer 1969

Former crewmember, Dave Moyer was kind enough to write with a corrected date of the photo and added "The gray box-like rectangle in the red circle on the flight deck was called a "bear trap." Believe, and I'm not 100% sure, that she was the first and possibly the only cutter to have one. The Canadians used them and the Guard decided to try one out. Inside the box were two bars on either side with metal teeth. In the center of the box was a cable attached to a high speed winch directly below in an interior compartment on the main deck. Helos (HH52s) at Cape May (Her homeport) were fixed with a probe. Helo would hover over the flight deck and lower the probe which would be attached to a fitting on the end of the high speed cable and then raised back up to the helo and made fast. Helo would then hover over the flight deck while tension was taken up on the cable. As the ship pitched and rolled the helo would apply "up" power keeping the cable taut. When the ship rolled back and/or pitched to level, the flight officer would engage the winch slamming the helo on deck. As the probe entered the box the two bars would slam closed catching the probe and holding the bird on the deck. The thing was designed to land the helos in almost any weather. Worked well also but heard the pilots weren't too fond of it. Transferred off as a QM1 in October of 1970 and it was still in use". Thanks Dave for the interesting explaination.
