USCGC GENERAL GREENE
March 7, 1960
A. R. Whittum, USCG retired gave this account "I was an ET2 while serving in the General Greene 1959 - 1960. I was
the QM on watch during that fateful day's happening (yeah, I know - ET's don't stand QM watch .... and I was a second RM watch
stander for Jim "Moose" Ronan also during my tour. And RD watch, etc. If it had vacuum tubes, I worked it ...).
Of course, on that day, I ended up on the main deck trying to catch shotlines from the Acushnet just as everyone else was
doing. Also managed to get washed over the side during that evolution. I was in the drink and even though I swam back to
hang on a scupper collar, I couldn't get back on board by myself - [BMC] Manny Cabral had to come over and drag me back on
board by the scruff of my neck."
From the Coast Guard Historians Office: "On 7 March 1960, she grounded at East Sandwich, Massachusetts while on
a rescue mission during the height of New England's worst storm of the year. Her tow line became entangled in her propellers,
rendering her engines useless. Though both her anchors were quickly dropped, only the port anchor kept the cutter from grounding
immediately. The cutter Acushnet responded but was unable to secure a towline to the disabled General Greene due to the heavy
winds and 40-foot seas. After the General Greene lost her starboard anchor and chain, she could not withstand the power of
the winds and seas that finally drove her ashore on the beach. It then took four days for the cutter Acushnet, with the assistance
of the Massachusetts National Guard working from the beach side to refloat the General Greene".

April 29, 1961
The GENERAL GREENE was commissioned on April 7 1926.
An excerpt from the Coast Guard Historians information states "During her final years in Coast Guard service, she
added to her duties the surveillance of foreign fishing fleets off the coast. She was decommissioned on 15 November 1968.
She was transferred to Newburyport, Massachusetts, for use as a museum ship but the City could not afford her upkeep. She
was reacquired by the Coast Guard in 1976 and turned over to the General Services Administration for final disposal. She
was sold and, in 1979, was seized by the Coast Guard for drug smuggling. At that time she was named Belmont and her 14-member
crew, all arrested, claimed Guatemalan registry." (USCG)

USCGC COLFAX WSC133
WWII
The COLFAX was commissioned on April 7, 1927 and was a 125 foot "Active Class Patrol Boat". She was originally
named MONTGOMERY and was first stationed in San Pedro CA but was reassigned to San Francisco in April of 1932. Her name was
changed to COLFAX on April 1 1933. She was stationed in Charleston, SC by the mid-1930's and was in Chicago by 1940. During
WWII she was based out of Philadelphia. She was decommissioned the final time on November 9, 1954 and sold on January 5.

CAN YOU HELP?
This is a photo of Roman Milanowicz. He was born in 1921 at Jersey City NJ and entered the Coast Guard sometime between 1938
and 1942 and served 1 1/2 years before being assigned to the U.S. Army in 1942. Mr Milanowics passed away in the 1970's. His
Army discharge papers indicate he was a Second Class Fireman while in the USCG and from the photo it appears that he was stationed
aboard the USCGC COLFAX. If you know of him or have any photos of the COLFAX you would like to share with his family please
let me know and I will get you in touch with them. Your help is much appreciated.
NOTE: 07/01/06 Received two photos along with the vessels history from the Coast Guard Historians Office today. They
have been placed on the 125 footer page. Thanks to Christopher B Havern, Historian for supplying this info.

The Cuyahoga was lost in a collision on October 20th 1978 with the SS SANTA CRUZ II. Eleven men aboard Cutter perished.
