USCGC REDWING ALASKA
ALASKA 1935
Built and launched at the Baltimore Dry Dock & Shipbuilding Co., Baltimore, MD., June 7, 1919. The 1009 ton, 187
foot USS REDWING was commissioned Minesweeper # 48.
She was transfered to the U.S.Coast Guard on May 24, 1924 and placed in commission as the USCGC REDWING WAT-48 on October
11, 1924.
She was returned to the Navy on August 29, 1944 and sunk by a mine off Bizert, Tunisia on June 29, 1943.

USS ASTERION WAK-123
Shown as the steamer SS EVELYN c 1918. She was 382'2" displacing 6,160 tons and launched on May 9, 1912. She operated
commercially between the east coast and the West Indies. Acquired by the U.S. Navy in 1942 and renamed USS ASTERION AK-100,
later redesignated AK-63. Her Naval service was actually as a "Q ship" with her armament concealed to help end the
sinkings of commercial craft off the U.S. coast. She had a very colorful Naval career earning one battle star during WWII.
On December 16, 1943 she was transferred to the Coast Guard and on January 12, 1944 designated WAK-123 although she never
saw service in that capacity but converted for weather ship duties on stations 3 and 4. She was decommissioned on July 20,
1944 and sold for scrap on September 10, 1946.

USCGC NORTHLAND
GREENLAND WWII
The 216 foot CGC NORTHLAND was commissioned in 1927 to replace the aging Cutter BEAR. Her original configuration was to
be twin masts with sail. With the onset of WWII her after mast was removed along with all sails and a crane and a aircraft
were added aft for recon.
On September 1, 1944 her crew made the first naval capture of WWII when a German trawler was seized in Greenland. She
later captured German radio and weather stations in the same area and earned two Battle Stars. She was decommissioned in
1946.
