The Coast Guard on Ellis Island
Receiving & Training Station 1939-1946

Provided by Garret Conklin

Ed Note: Never knew the Coast Guard was on Ellis Island, but we were there from 1939 to 1946. It was a "Receiving Center" for crews being put together for the Navy ships that were CG-manned (APA35 - USS Callaway is pictured). Also the island apparently served as a boot camp for some. meanwhile, Immigration was on the other part of the island, where a lot of foreign-born (read "Germans") that were interred on the island during WWII. As you look through the book, keep your eyes out for Cesar Romero, Jimmy Durante, Tommy Dorsey, Lionel Hamptn, Eddie Foy and Mike O'Shea. 60,000 men went through there. This book is like any other cruise book, being by and for the permanent station crew. The only difference is the unit, although completely surrounded by water, was permanently "at anchor", and never got underway ... /s/ Garret
